Embedding a Future Generations perspective into EU Governance
The Jesuit European Social Centre (JESC) has been actively promoting the integration of future generations’ interests into EU governance through two major events:
The Future Generations Conference, co-organized with UCLouvain and the University of Barcelona, explored intergenerational challenges such as climate change, AI, and democratic resilience. It brought together experts and policymakers to inspire actionable solutions.
Europe for the Future: Developing Tools to Build an EU Fit for Future Generations, held at the European Parliament, focused on creating legal frameworks, proposing a Future Generations Commissioner, and embedding intergenerational justice into EU policymaking. This was a Fit for Future Generations Coalition event, of which JESC is a founding member.

Implementing the UN Declaration on Future Generations
The School of International Futures (SOIF) recently launched its “Implementation Handbook for the UN Declaration on Future Generations,” offering a practical guide for embedding long-term governance and intergenerational fairness into national strategies. This handbook distills insights from global innovators, providing policymakers and civil society actors with tools to translate the Declaration’s commitments into actionable frameworks. The publication aims to ensure that countries can effectively integrate future generations’ interests into their governance practices, supporting the global transition towards sustainable and equitable policies.

NiFG Participation in the UN Summit of the Future: Greetings from New York!
The Network of Institutions and Leaders for Future Generations (NiFG) has gathered in New York this September to attend to the UN Summit of the Future and the Actions Days in the lead to the event. We’re celebrating the Declaration on Future Generations—a significant step forward that brings hope for new opportunities and a path towards a more inclusive and sustainable world to current and future generations.

Pushing the agenda forward: the Future Generations Forum in Cardiff
The Future Generations Forum, organized by Commissioner for Future Generations in Wales, Derek Walker, and his office, gathered global experts to support the UN Declaration for Future Generations and the Summit of the Future. The event drew lessons from Wales’ experience and featured discussions on critical challenges facing people and the planet. Notable attendees included NiFG members Cat Tully, Elizabeth Dirth, Jonas Mikkelsen, and the Lithuanian Office of the Committee for the Future. A key outcome was the ‘Wales Protocol for Future Generations,’ a guide for promoting the Declaration for Future Generations.

Manifesto for Future Generations launch in the Dutch Parliament, the Hague
On April 25th, members of NiFG gathered at the Dutch Parliament Building to launch the Manifesto for Future Generations, emphasizing a vision for protecting future generations’ rights in the Netherlands. Hosted by Jan van de Venis and the Lab Toekomstige Generaties, the event featured dialogues on intergenerational equity and futures governance. Prof. Daniella Tilbury, NiFG Chair and former Commissioner for Sustainable Development of Gibraltar, opened a panel including Prof. Gyula Bándi, Derek Walker, and Elizabeth Dirth. Renowned author Roman Krznaric, inspired by his book “The Good Ancestor,” also contributed to the discussions.

NiFG at UN Consultations for the Declaration on Future Generations
Prof. Daniella Tilbury, chair of NiFG, represented the network at the ‘Informal Consultations with Stakeholders on the Intergovernmental Process for the Declaration on Future Generations’, hosted this January 16th. Her input spoke on the need to up-scale ambition to future generations, and the establishment of governance frameworks to safeguard future generations interests, rights, and well-being, such as Special Envoy for Future Generations at UN.
